Domain Name: How To Correctly Choose One – Internet Marketing Guide
One of the biggest mistake Internet marketers make time after time is choosing the wrong domain name for their website. This ends up costing them time, money and lots of effort in the long run.
In this article I will highlight the key elements for selecting a good name for your website.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is frequently confused with a URL, but there is however a significant distinction. The URL is the full address of your website and it includes the domain name. For example: www. healthycooking. com.
The domain name is the part between “www” and “.com“, so in the above example it is healthycooking.
Your domain name is your foundation for whatever you are trying to build, so unless you are a massive enterprise, like Google, Facebook or Twitter, an SEO friendly domain name is a really important asset to have.
An appropriate domain name should reflect what your website is all about. So for example if you are providing gluten free bread, these keywords should be included in your domain name.
The best domains are those that are an exact match to your targeted keywords. For example if you wanted to promote car insurance, the exact match would be: carinsurance.com. The words are in the right order so it gives it a 100% keyword density.
If you can’t find an exact match domain, the next best thing is a phrase match domain. For example: mycarinsurance.com or carinsuranceinfo.com. If you are still struggling, then you can seek a broad match domain: bestcaronlineinsurance.com
Why is it important to get it right?
Along with other factors like back links and content, having the keywords or key phrase that you want to target in your domain name is a key element that search engines consider when trying to rank your website.
Once you understand the importance this has on your web marketing campaign you will not only be able to get faster rankings in less time and effort, but it will also save you a lot of money.
Don’t fall in this trap!
Lots of people get seduced by the huge successes of Google, Facebook or Twitter which all have wacky and catchy names. They then try to imitate them and work hard at creating a “super cool” name for their websites, without giving any consideration to crucial keywords or key phrases.
The less optimised your domain is for your targeted key phrase the harder it is going to be to get your site ranking. So including the right keywords in your domain name is crucial to the survival of your website.
